Ingredients

  • 1 lb 450g ground beef (85/15)
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup onion finely chopped
  • ½ cup onion sliced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth or water

Equipment

  • Oven-safe skillet or pan
  • Measuring Cups & Spoons
  • spatula
  • Mixing bowl

Method

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently.
  2. Shape the Patties: Divide mixture into 4 portions. Shape into oval or round patties, making a small indentation in the center.
  3. Sear the Patties: Heat oil or butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties 2-3 minutes per side, then remove and set aside.
  4. Cook Onions for Gravy: In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions until soft and golden. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir 1-2 minutes.
  5. Make the Gravy: Slowly add beef broth or water while stirring. Simmer until thickened, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper.
  6. Bake the Patties: Nestle patties into gravy, cover, and bake at 375°F / 190°C for 20-25 minutes until fully cooked.
  7. Rest and Serve: Let patties rest a few minutes. Serve with favorite sides.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the beef → keeps patties tender
  • Oven alternatives → finish on stovetop over medium-low heat
  • Ground turkey or chicken → lighter variation
  • Skip gravy → serve with olive oil or butter drizzle
  • Make ahead: Shape patties up to 24 hours in advance
